Marimekko is releasing a clothing line, in the spirit of Jackie O, through H&M. New York Magazine has the story, and here is an image that I grabbed from that article (which you can read here)

I’m not sure I am a total fan. I love the stuff on bedsheets, shower curtains, even plates - but on clothes…. I think you would have to be in extremely good shape and have your fashion sense really tuned to pull this off. The reason being that these patterns which are so big and bright will otherwise call out whatever you think is unflattering about yourself. I mean, I stand pretty firmly that any sized person can wear whatever they want to… in theory. In practice, it will make you feel uncomfortable to be having these crazy patterns making your butt look huger than it is, or calling out your lack of curve.

But, keep on making those sheets, Ms. Mekko.

Paul Pope, an artist known his “slopily brilliant” style in comics and graphic novels, is emerging in the fashion design world. Last year, he did the store art for the SoHo (NY) Diesel store. (Pictured). Recently, he was hired by DKNY to design a line of jeans.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Mr. Pope and the charming urban stalwart of a label met to discuss the possibility of working together, and within 6 weeks, the project was underway.

Mr. Nipon was impressed by Mr. Pope’s wide-ranging creative interests and his pointed technical questions about the line.

Some tasks Mr. Pope worked on are tee shirt designs and patterns for hoodies.

Guys, go put Resevoir Dogs and/or Pulp Fiction on your netflix because you are about to start to put together (if you havn’t already) a plain black suit with skinny black tie combo.

GQ has been bringing this up for about three issues. ThisNext tells us that it “Seals the Punk Look.” Seal wore a skinny black tie to the grammy’s this year (see previous post).  Justin Timberlake uses this look all the time. Brad Pitt too.

Vanessa Valiente, personal stylist, describes the ins and outs of the skinny black tie. She says,

On the occasion when a suit is necessary the skinny tie is so hot and so easy.

New York Magazine ScreenshotTo be honest, I am not really the best authority on fashion week. I once dated a guy who’s mother was allegedly a designer and he was going to take me to the event, some three years ago. But he didn’t make the cut, and I never got to go. Now I am watching from the west coast, mostly just looking at New York Magazine and various other online media to find out what is going on.

Before this week, I had never realized the volume and usability of information provided by New York Magazine, regarding fashion. You can find out what is going on by show, model, style, color, print, designer, or get a more zeitgeisty picture of things by checking out the blog or the lookbook. The Lookbook, different from the fat industry print publication, is a daily picture of someone ‘fashionable’ and some quotes from them as well. Here is today’s: http://nymag.com/fashion/lookbook/43556/

Also, quite educational, is the model page - a profile on today’s fashion models telling us what they are known for, who they work with and even who their friends are. Be sure to check out their “Models who Eat” feature - three models, so far, are noted.

After posting the Washington Post fashion slide show on the presidential candidates sense of style, I found an more indepth, more objective look at the candidates style by the Style Guy of GQ’s men.style.com.

The Style Guy is one of my favorites, and I highly recommend all guys interested in fashion to take a look at his work.

Metropop Fashion Magazine

December 12th, 2007

Metro•Pop is a fashion magazine that I have really come to like. Not as industrialized as Vogue or Lucky, not as crappy as the millions of crappy zines out there, Metro•Pop strikes just the right balance, showing me the street style fashions that are really out there, on models that COULD be people I know. I don’t know them, but it isn’t totally out of the realm of possibility.

They give a lot of emphasis to fashion photography, and graphic design. They have many pages devoted to several photographers, in the same way that Vogue will do, but the photography is much younger, much more based on street style. The cover of the magazine is always stunning and intriguing, sometimes, like their recent shoe issue, they opt for abstract design rather than a hot woman. Sometimes the hot woman, too.

My only complaint: They don’t publish a date on their issues so you have no idea when the issue is from if you happen to pick it up somewhere.
