Marimekko is releasing a clothing line, in the spirit of Jackie O, through H&M. New York Magazine has the story, and here is an image that I grabbed from that article (which you can read here)

MeriMekko at H&M

I’m not sure I am a total fan. I love the stuff on bedsheets, shower curtains, even plates - but on clothes…. I think you would have to be in extremely good shape and have your fashion sense really tuned to pull this off. The reason being that these patterns which are so big and bright will otherwise call out whatever you think is unflattering about yourself. I mean, I stand pretty firmly that any sized person can wear whatever they want to… in theory. In practice, it will make you feel uncomfortable to be having these crazy patterns making your butt look huger than it is, or calling out your lack of curve.

But, keep on making those sheets, Ms. Mekko.

Crackdown on Canal Street

February 27th, 2008

Women’s Wear Daily reports that the New York City Police have shut down the “counterfeit triangle” down around Canal Street in New York City. I guess I’m glad I’m not there to witness this. I know it is a big problem for designers but I feel sad about this.

For those who don’t know what I’m talking about, Canal Street is one of the southern most cross streets in New York City. From the west, it is where you end up coming off of the Holland Tunnel from New Jersey. It marks the bottom of Soho in the center of the island, and then to the East it cuts through Chinatown, and then becomes the Manhattan Bridge, leading one over to Brooklyn, around near Fort Greene where I used to live. *Sigh*

Right around the transition from Soho to Chinatown, there were tons and tons of little shops and tables and stands selling knock offs of bags, watches, and whatever else they could get knock offs of. Seriously, it was crazy - it was obviously knock offs - no one was fooling anybody. But honestly, if you aren’t a person who is a slave to brands, does it really matter that much? Well some would say yes it does, in the same way that it matters if you “acquire” music without buying it.

Well, today, the NYPD, lead by the City’s Commander-in-Chief, Michael Bloomberg, took decisive action, running a raid that seized more that $1M dollars worth of goods. Considering items generally cost between $5 and $40, that is a lotta goods.

I always liked the rough insanity of Canal Street. There were tons of people there, and a lot of stuff going on. It seemed like the knock offs were mostly sold to tourists, and maybe young stylish folks without the cash to actually buy a Gucci bag. Will that young person be able to now afford a real Gucci Bag, now that the knock offs are knocked off? I highly doubt it. Was it the knock offs that were driving up the prices? Not likely. No one who can actually afford designer stuff is going to buy the knock offs. It just isn’t really that believable a copy. I can’t tell you how many times I sat on the subway looking at people and being like, “that’s fake, that’s fake, that’s fake, that’s fake.” Seriously. No one is fooled. But I kind of feel, if you want to front like that, well, that’s your right as an American. Fake it ’til you make it, right?

Further south of Canal Street, you can take the Ferry to Ellis Island, and in the Ellis Island museum you can look at a display of political cartoons from the early 1900’s when Immigration was on everyone’s mind. There is a cartoon of the Fat Cats, Fathers of Industry, stopping the young immigrant from getting off the boat. And then for each fat cat, it shows his gnarly former self. Do you get it?

New York Fashion Week is Here

February 1st, 2008

New York’s Fashion Week is here. Sigh. I wish I was there.

I think New York magazine has been stealing ideas from my other website, Stylastic. You can vote on looks and say if they are “hideous or fabulous”, and the votes get calculated to rank the top 100 looks.

My New Cap - WeSC

January 30th, 2008

My grandmother, no longer with me on this earth, wore her cap to bed every night. She also could read your cards and tell your fortune, and wrote songs where creating the rhyme took precedent over making sense of the verse. I have often worn wool hats inside the house which makes my mother sigh that I remind her of her mother and thus, I infer, she isn’t sure of what to think of my hat. She wouldn’t wear it in the house, I also get out of this. This weekend I went skiing (and did not fall once thank you), and so last Friday, tramping through the rain, I stopped at Crossroads and found myself a new hat.

WeSC Hat

Crossroads, as you may know, is one of the greatest stores in San Francisco. I haven’t written about it yet, so perhaps I will do so tomorrow - I am trying to keep focused from post to post. Basically, it is a mix of used and new clothing, always in style and always reasonably priced.

At Crossroads (The one in the Filmore District) I got this hat by WeSC. WeSC stands for “We Are The Superlative Conspiracy” and they are one of these new types of clothing brands/art/activist groups. They feature on their website a pretty cool image of a bunch of cool looking people hanging out in the park, combined with collage-ish cutouts. Their top level links get you to their Spring Summer Collection (Its January!) and a list of activists - actually a portfolio of skaters, artist, musicians, and other folks who I guess endorse WeSC.

You might be trying to figure out if I am on the side or against WeSC - well, that is kind of what their name makes you ask as well so I will leave you guessing. I will say that the hat wasn’t expensive, and besides Crossroads there are plenty of places to get a good deal on their stuff. But here are the pictures of my new favorite piece of clothing: my wool WeSC cap. Love you Grandma Katie.

My brother lives in San Diego, and he is a LOT cooler than me. It didn’t start out that way, but as it sometimes goes, the younger sibling takes the good traits of the older one, and expands.

My brother has expanded to San Diego, where he is in touch with all the galleries, community events and new boutiques. He keyed me in to one, Kate Ross, a boutique for men and women carrying brands such as Hobo, Brown Sound, Dita, and Friend or Foe. He says this about Kate Ross:

This is a store in my neighborhood. She just opened another - a shoe store and home store with my friend who is an artist - Amy Paul - beautiful stuff. They had their grand opening last night - very cool. DJ, bar, lots of people.

I had been helping all week to get the store ready. We put in this awesome stair case

Did I mention my brother can build things like staircases?

Anyway, if you like clothes and you live in San Diego, Kate Ross is a boutique worth looking into. It isn’t too late to be the first of your friends to go there!

I hope this reaches the interested in time - the San Francisco Based Fashion Design House and Online Shop, Improperazzi, are showcasing their work tongiht at AsiaSF via the STILETTO party. As I have never been to AsiaSf, I will quote from the 7×7 website:

This SF landmark dishes up Cal-Asian cuisine along with gender-illusionist entertainment, shattering the conventional idea of “dinner and a show.”

I want to go RIGHT NOW. But I’ll have to wait for tonight.

STILETTO is the Friday/Saturday night party hosted by Andrew Parker where you can get your fill of photography, film, DJ action.

Finally, back to the fashion: Improperazzi is an edgy shop, on the street style end of the fashion spectrum. They have print tees for men and women, bags and hoodies. Their website is awesome. You should really look at it right now. It is made to look like a skeezy tabloid lying on the table at an even skeezier bar. Their clothes: A small collection, the tees are all printed or screened - skulls, scissors, Asian Flag inspired, repeating patterns. Many of the prints have a dark humor about them. The bags, from their site, look like regular bags that they spray painted with stencils. Only one hoodie, a big skull - I wasn’t as much of a fan as of the tees.

Check out the show tonight, or at least check out their striking website.

I don’t know if I have mentioned this before, but I love Diane von Furstenberg dresses. They are just so beautiful and straightforward, and they compliment a body style similar to my own.

Recently, I found this blog: The Diane von Furstenberg Personal Shopper.

If you aren’t familiar with Diane von Furstenberg, here are some pictures which I found on the site above. She’s most known for the classic wrap dress. She uses both solid colors as well as interesting fabrics that you wouldn’t think of at first but when you see them you understand.

If you like these dresses, you should check out the personal shopper site. They have a great selection, some of which I have put below to show you the style.
