Guys, go put Resevoir Dogs and/or Pulp Fiction on your netflix because you are about to start to put together (if you havn’t already) a plain black suit with skinny black tie combo.

GQ has been bringing this up for about three issues. ThisNext tells us that it “Seals the Punk Look.” Seal wore a skinny black tie to the grammy’s this year (see previous post).  Justin Timberlake uses this look all the time. Brad Pitt too.

Vanessa Valiente, personal stylist, describes the ins and outs of the skinny black tie. She says,

On the occasion when a suit is necessary the skinny tie is so hot and so easy.

FCUK Jacket for my Boyfriend

February 6th, 2008

I was looking for a jacket to buy for my boyfriend today. I found these two at FCUK (French Connection UK) that I like. Either is most likely too expensive for my broke a**, but I like them anyway. I can’t decide which one I like better, but I am leaning toward the sprintz.

1. The Parker: (today’s price: $248):

2. The Sprintz - my current favorite (today’s price: $189)

New York Magazine ScreenshotTo be honest, I am not really the best authority on fashion week. I once dated a guy who’s mother was allegedly a designer and he was going to take me to the event, some three years ago. But he didn’t make the cut, and I never got to go. Now I am watching from the west coast, mostly just looking at New York Magazine and various other online media to find out what is going on.

Before this week, I had never realized the volume and usability of information provided by New York Magazine, regarding fashion. You can find out what is going on by show, model, style, color, print, designer, or get a more zeitgeisty picture of things by checking out the blog or the lookbook. The Lookbook, different from the fat industry print publication, is a daily picture of someone ‘fashionable’ and some quotes from them as well. Here is today’s: http://nymag.com/fashion/lookbook/43556/

Also, quite educational, is the model page - a profile on today’s fashion models telling us what they are known for, who they work with and even who their friends are. Be sure to check out their “Models who Eat” feature - three models, so far, are noted.

New York Fashion Week is Here

February 1st, 2008

New York’s Fashion Week is here. Sigh. I wish I was there.

I think New York magazine has been stealing ideas from my other website, Stylastic. You can vote on looks and say if they are “hideous or fabulous”, and the votes get calculated to rank the top 100 looks.

I don’t know if I have mentioned this before, but I love Diane von Furstenberg dresses. They are just so beautiful and straightforward, and they compliment a body style similar to my own.

Recently, I found this blog: The Diane von Furstenberg Personal Shopper.

If you aren’t familiar with Diane von Furstenberg, here are some pictures which I found on the site above. She’s most known for the classic wrap dress. She uses both solid colors as well as interesting fabrics that you wouldn’t think of at first but when you see them you understand.

If you like these dresses, you should check out the personal shopper site. They have a great selection, some of which I have put below to show you the style.

Ambiance San Francisco

December 10th, 2007

My current favorite boutique in San Francisco is Ambiance. My sister and I went there a few times, and every time, I want to get everything. They won the “most pretty dresses” award from the San Francisco Guardian.

If you have ever seen a very chic looking woman walking down the street and said, “Where can I get clothes like this?”…here you go. Some brands they carry(copied from their site):
Free People (a looking fly fav), French Connection, BCBG, Tulle, Weston Wear, Sweet Pea, By Cesar, Shine, Hype, Laundry, Plenty, Susanna Monaco, LA Made, Angie, Joe’s Jeans, Kenneth Cole Reaction, Luscious, Robert Rose, Franco Sarto, Jeffrey Campbell, Zazou, Liquid, Kensie, Sue Wong, Silver Jeans, Level 99, Hale Bob, Michael Stars, Tina Turk, Tom K Nguyen, Hazel, Ann Ferriday, Betsey Johnson, Veronica M, Seychelles, Odyn, Micheal by Michael Kors and Alternative Apparel.

The second to last time I went: My sister had come to town for the night, and was planning to go out to dinner with her friends - fancy night out on the town is a treat for hard working, fly professionals such as her. She brought an outfit that included brown suede pants. Living in a desert climate, she did not realize the moodiness of San Francisco might turn to rain, which it had done. Can’t wear suede pants in rain!

Well, we walked into Ambiance. My sis explains her situation to the young woman working there, who listened carefully, and said, “I got you.” She got my sister’s size, and brought out some 6 to 10 pairs of brown pants. Their system of communication is much like how thiings must have been before phones were invented - a shout to the person running the dressing room area gets my sister all set up. It is such a crazy thing to say, but a store that has a lot of great clothes as well as intelligent, knowlegable sales people….. not always easy to find.
