Looking Fly - A Fashion Blog

As a street style evangelist, I am always looking for great blogs and sites promoting street style. Of course, my first loyalty is always to my company, Stylastic, but I am always looking for other sites that hit the fashion nail on the head.

I found this LA one - HiStyley. Points for the name for sure. HiStyley’s philosphy is fun, small quantity, high quality street photography. Tittyboo, the proprieter of the site, has a great eye and, from the information about the site, is really respectful of people’s privacy.

Street Style Fans, I recommend you check out HiStyley immediately.

Have you ever been to Jeremy’s? There is one in Berkeley, I believe, and one in the South Park neighborhood of San Francisco - right by the ballpark. That is the one I go to.

It is so great - it has all kinds of fabulous deals on designer and trendy clothes, shoes, etc. The only thing is that you have to be prepared to spend much time in this place. Especially if they are having a sale. I once found a sweater marked down from $400 to $2. That’s 200 pennies, folks. You probably have that in a jar in your apartment somewhere.

Guys, no need to be jealous - the store is two levels and you have half of each level all for yourself (I think - at least the first floor for sure). And, the guys’ side is always PRISTINE - no one is ever there - and yet I have seen Lucky Jeans for $45 there sometimes. Gay or straight, $45 Lucky Jeans is something you want.

An excerpt from their Search-Engine-Unfriendly, un-selectable text in their faq, they answer the question “Why is everything so inexpensive?” they answer, “We get our discounted merchandise from a variety of sources….” I believe that says it all.

Shana Logic - cute indie gifts

December 21st, 2007

ShanaLogic, the popular online indie gift store, is a favorite of mine. I’ve been a fan since it was only the shop on pixelgirlpresents - in fact, you can find a testimonial from me on that site if you look a little. PixelGirlPresents is site to find icons, desktop wallpaper if you are into mega-cute. ShanaLogic, also presented by Shana Victor (double bonus for sharing my name and triple bonus for spelling it the same), is a shop selling cutie cutie cutie jewelry, accessories, original art, toys, etc. Below are some pictures of sample items from their selection. Some items shown *may* be sold out.

If I Was A Boy Part 1

December 19th, 2007

Today will be my first entry in an ongoing series which I will call, “If I was a boy.” My boyfriend is against the idea of me wishing I had a boy body sometimes, but I’m not so sure.

Boys don’t know how good they have it, when it comes to street style at least. Better t-shirts. Better sneakers. Better jeans. Baggy. The style is not about showing off your body but comfortably covering your body so you can get to work. And it looks good. This is the case, really, with not only street style, but professional style.

Anyway, my first item in this series is the layered, cutup skull tee shirt featured on hintmag. Actually, on reading their description more closely, they say ladies have worn the top layer only and looked majorly fly (paraphrased) so maybe this is a bad choice.

So to punctuate the point, let me add another item: hanes tee shirts. The entire brand. I don’t look that good in a t-shirt, the most basic of clothing items in this modern world. I am including a classic michael jordan hanes commercial to show you what I mean.

And that is a plain white tee shirt!

No Brands

December 17th, 2007

This past weeked I was helping my step daughter look for winter coats. She is looking for one with a faux fur hood - originally thinking white, but upon further consideration, probably a darker color.

I was showing her some Abercrombie jackets that I thought fit the bill - the Lexie and the Casey jackets, particularly.

Well, she was quite interested, but the more we talked, the more she got to talking about her personal style. She was saying - really politely because I could tell she was trying not to offend me (which, as an aside, I find hysterical and adorable) - that she likes to do the non-standard brand sometimes, and that her style is a little more funky and creative than her friends.

So awesome. I mean, as an adult on a budget, trying to look somewhat professional, with limited time to spare in my life, I can totally see the advantages of searching within mainstream brands - quick, consistent, easy.

But for a teenager working out her personal style, I am thrilled to see her going against the “brand loyalty” crowd. I think it is the sign of a independent-thinker, which I am looking forward to seeing develop.

I don’t know if I have mentioned this before, but I love Diane von Furstenberg dresses. They are just so beautiful and straightforward, and they compliment a body style similar to my own.

Recently, I found this blog: The Diane von Furstenberg Personal Shopper.

If you aren’t familiar with Diane von Furstenberg, here are some pictures which I found on the site above. She’s most known for the classic wrap dress. She uses both solid colors as well as interesting fabrics that you wouldn’t think of at first but when you see them you understand.

If you like these dresses, you should check out the personal shopper site. They have a great selection, some of which I have put below to show you the style.

Metropop Fashion Magazine

December 12th, 2007

Metro•Pop is a fashion magazine that I have really come to like. Not as industrialized as Vogue or Lucky, not as crappy as the millions of crappy zines out there, Metro•Pop strikes just the right balance, showing me the street style fashions that are really out there, on models that COULD be people I know. I don’t know them, but it isn’t totally out of the realm of possibility.

They give a lot of emphasis to fashion photography, and graphic design. They have many pages devoted to several photographers, in the same way that Vogue will do, but the photography is much younger, much more based on street style. The cover of the magazine is always stunning and intriguing, sometimes, like their recent shoe issue, they opt for abstract design rather than a hot woman. Sometimes the hot woman, too.

My only complaint: They don’t publish a date on their issues so you have no idea when the issue is from if you happen to pick it up somewhere.

Applebottoms…Get It???

December 11th, 2007

More on the topic of cute backpockets of jeans…. Applebottoms is really the master of this. Exhibit A:

Exhibit B:

Applebottoms is even smart enough to have an excellent selection of jeans for those of us who have got extra blessings in the booty department. See what I mean?

Ambiance San Francisco

December 10th, 2007

My current favorite boutique in San Francisco is Ambiance. My sister and I went there a few times, and every time, I want to get everything. They won the “most pretty dresses” award from the San Francisco Guardian.

If you have ever seen a very chic looking woman walking down the street and said, “Where can I get clothes like this?”…here you go. Some brands they carry(copied from their site):
Free People (a looking fly fav), French Connection, BCBG, Tulle, Weston Wear, Sweet Pea, By Cesar, Shine, Hype, Laundry, Plenty, Susanna Monaco, LA Made, Angie, Joe’s Jeans, Kenneth Cole Reaction, Luscious, Robert Rose, Franco Sarto, Jeffrey Campbell, Zazou, Liquid, Kensie, Sue Wong, Silver Jeans, Level 99, Hale Bob, Michael Stars, Tina Turk, Tom K Nguyen, Hazel, Ann Ferriday, Betsey Johnson, Veronica M, Seychelles, Odyn, Micheal by Michael Kors and Alternative Apparel.

The second to last time I went: My sister had come to town for the night, and was planning to go out to dinner with her friends - fancy night out on the town is a treat for hard working, fly professionals such as her. She brought an outfit that included brown suede pants. Living in a desert climate, she did not realize the moodiness of San Francisco might turn to rain, which it had done. Can’t wear suede pants in rain!

Well, we walked into Ambiance. My sis explains her situation to the young woman working there, who listened carefully, and said, “I got you.” She got my sister’s size, and brought out some 6 to 10 pairs of brown pants. Their system of communication is much like how thiings must have been before phones were invented - a shout to the person running the dressing room area gets my sister all set up. It is such a crazy thing to say, but a store that has a lot of great clothes as well as intelligent, knowlegable sales people….. not always easy to find.

Stylastic.com, a social media site about seeing street style and looking at trends, has been reviewed on KillerStartups.com. Check out Stylastic here and then vote for them here. As of this post, they are in 4th place and need about 40 votes to get to the top!

Are you at this point asking yourself, is “Looking Fly” affiliated in any way with Stylastic? The answer is Yes. I am one of the owners of Stylastic. But even if I am a little biased doesn’t mean Stylastic isn’t awesome. Check it out for yourself and the vote!
